"Violets and Perfume"

"Violets and Perfume"

I have fun most of the time setting up an arrangement
of things. I started with the main object which are the flowers,
then I searched through my shelves where I keep a lot of my stuff
to paint to see if I can find something to go with the flowers.
When I couldn't find anything there, I searched around the
house looking and looking, that won't work, no that won't
work either, then it clicked when I spotted this little perfume bottle
with it's little top, that worked!

"Summer Light"

"Summer Light"
oil, 16x20"

My paintings are mostly done in tones, I strive mainly on
values first and keeping my colors also in check with values.
I always have to be excited about my subject, if I'm not which
happens sometimes, that painting goes no where
and is quite frustrating. When I get the right lighting on my
subject that's really exciting to me!

I really enjoy painting tin cans, love the reflections on the shiny silver
tin. All my annuals are dying off now, very sad. But hopefully I will
search for cold weather flowers. Here in Washington State with the first
freeze the geraniums are gone and won't come back. Being from
California I am use to the fuchsias, geraniums etc. thriving for years.

"Phlox"

"Phlox"
oil on linen panel, 8x10"

After purchasing these phlox's from the nursery
I placed the flowers on my lap on the drive home.
The sun was casting beautiful light and shadows on them, so
I snapped a few pictures so I could incorporate
that same light into the painting.
When something strikes me for a painting to paint,
act quickly, take a photo or write down my ideas
for a painting (subject matter etc.) I sometimes
wish I had remembered that thought or had taken that photo,
I have done that quite often and regret it. (I'm talking to myself)
This time I didn't second guess and went for it! Flowers in my lap
in the car with wonderful light!

"Overflowing Pansies"

My pansies were so abundant this year they overflowed the
pot they were in. Didn't get much sunshine this summer in the
pacific northwest although pansies seem to do better in cooler weather.
Our other annuals didn't do to well, a bit straggly.

"Bucket of Lobelia"

"Bucket of Lobelia"
oil, 8x8" Sold

These wonderful lobelias were out on my deck just glowing in the sun.
Lobelias are one of my favorite flowers to paint.
They are such dainty flowers by themselves but when they
mass together the colors are so vibrant.

the book closed and the teacup was empty.

"Hydrangea"

"Hydrangea"
oil, 7x5" Sold

My husband cut this hydrangea and put it into
a really fancy crystal glass. When I first saw it
I thought it was so beautiful I had to paint it.
How wonderful it was to take a break
from wondering what I should paint next!!!

Bought these pansies at the nursery and set this arrangement up
to paint in my studio.
I really enjoy painting scenes that  are a part of my life and love doing,
picking out the flowers, getting the clay pot ready for new
dirt and of course to water, but the most rewarding is watching them grow
and enjoying the beauty that God has created
for us.

"Bursting Petunias"

"Bursting Petunias"
oil, 8x10"

My husband brought these petunias home to plant in our garden,
hold on, I told him, those need to be painted. I started out
painting them in their containers from the nursery then decided
to put them in a basket instead. It felt like they were
trailing out of the painting.

This is when I decided to put them in a basket

"Lilies"

oil, 14x11"

I set these beautiful lilies up in my studio to paint from life. They seemed to
last awhile, so didn't have to rush but they did start to move.
Sometimes I'll take a picture of the flowers if they move to much
so I can look at the photo where they were in the beginning when
painting them. Or try to remember their position.
I love that little cup, I've used it in quite a few of my paintings.

"Glowing Daffodils"

"Glowing Daffodils"
oil, stretched linen

I painted these daffodils during the time the daffodils
were blooming. I wait awhile until my paintings are
dry enough to varnish. It was daylight but decided to
make it nighttime with indoor light. The daffodils seemed to
glow better with a dark background.

Early last month my Rhododendrons were almost on their
way out. I cut this one off and painted it from life.
When living in California to grow a Rhode wasn't  easy,
here in Washington they grow enormous. We have
quite a few of them in our yard, one that really stands out is
our yellow one.
They are so beautiful when their in bloom!

"Violets and Tea"

 "Violets and Tea"
oil, 8x10"

I set this still life up finding objects to add to the violets in
the clay pot and came up with this composition. I always
love to paint the light and of course the shadows too!
I am so grateful for all of God's creation, it just amazes me.
I remember years ago when I first started to paint, I picked
a small flower and examined it carefully and was so
excited to see how each petal was perfectly placed in
perfect order.

"Good Morning"

"Good Morning"
oil, 10x8" Sold

What caught my eye to paint this painting of Henry
was the way he was positioned,
I liked how the composition formed a circle.
The position of Henry was confusing my mind at first while painting
him, I really had to keep thinking of shapes, positive and
negative etc.. All and all I am very happy how it
turned out. He is so adorable!

"Painting Within"

"Painting Within"
oil, 10x8"

I set this still life up and decided to put a painting within a
painting. I wanted to have the painting to have
a more simple and fun look with the painting sitting
on the easel. It took awhile to figure out, I always second guess myself
so I just went for it and it felt right.

This in one of the properties that my friends and I stopped at while
participating in a garden tour. It's in a woodsy area with land
that's left natural. There were goats, chickens, peacocks and
more. While walking through the beautiful settings I came
across this greenhouse, it really struck me the way the light was
warm and subtle. The house on the property was built in the
early 1900's.

"To Paint the Flower"

"To Paint the Flower"
oil, 10x8"

I usually start my paintings with
a simple sketch and not real
detailed. There are times I am
not happy with the composition
and have to wipe areas out. So
I don't want to get to picky in
the beginning. I love the start of
a painting it always feels

"Lavenders in Tin"

"Lavenders in Tin"
oil, 10x8" Sold

I have been in the mood to paint tin cans lately, they are used
to can all sorts of food products but they are very fun and intriguing
to paint. I love the shiny silver of the can that reflects like a mirror causing
many values that surrounds it. Plus I love to paint flowers!
