I am so drawn to the light and shadows in paintings. When visiting the museums my eyes always go to paintings with beautiful lights and shadows. I grew up in Saratoga, CA, the surroundings were so beautiful, lots of trees, creeks etc.. When I was a child I was always observing the lights and shadows in nature. Gods creation is so perfect.

"Dianthus Glowing in Red", oil 5x7 Sold

I picked these dianthus from my garden. When the light shinned on them the reds were glowing with color. I wanted to capture in a painting those beautiful reds. What a treat and honor to enjoy what God has createdf for all of us.

This seagull was enjoying his surroundings, keeping a seagull eye on everything, giving me a chance to take some pictures. This was at Cannery Row down at the marina in Monterey, California. I painted a larger painting of this seagull but thought it would be fun to paint a smaller version to get a close up of him or her.

This is another painting from my lilac tree. There was a fence behind the tree but I decided to make it a blue wall to play off the blue shadows in the flowers.

"Red Dianthus" 8x10 oil

I had saved some green olive jars, I really like the shape of them. So I took some clippings from the dianthus that I was growing in pots and placed them in the olive jars to paint. I would say most flowers don't make good models, they move but that won't stop me from painting them they are to beautiful not to.

I was sitting out on my deck and noticed a Junco bird walking right pass me. My eyes followed where she was heading. She flew right up into my planter stand which contained some yellow primroses, she was building her nest along with her mate.

I was really worried because other birds had built their nests in my flower containers on the deck before and the babies didn't make it. I was nervous but I couldn't stop her, she was on a roll bringing in straw, moss etc., etc.

I took pictures with each process, from building the nest till the babies where born. The painting where she is sitting on her nest, I was sitting pretty close to her and zoomed in with my camera. The painting that shows the babies born, I was able to get a shot from inside the house looking down at them.
I would whistle, Jesus Loves You every time I would walk out on the deck, they seemed to feel comfortable around me.

The babies did make it and flew away but I think that they are still around and feeding from the bird feeder.

After the nest was empty I saw the mother days later on the roof. I whistled that tune again to see if it was her, she flew down by me and sat on the chair to say hello. To my surprise she laid some more eggs about two weeks later, they made it too.

"Sprig in the Cottage Sink" oil 8x8

This old sink was in a cottage in Carmel that my husband and I stayed in. I have painted this sink before in different perspectives. I picked the sprig of geraniums from the window box outside the cottage. I am so attracted to old things, they have so much to say without speaking.

"Spring Brings the Lilacs" oil 8x10

"Spring Brings the Lilacs"
oil, 8x10" SOLD

The lilacs are in full bloom right now and are so beautiful. I have a lilac tree in my backyard that is covered with lilacs. I clipped some off the tree to paint this painting, they started to show a sign of wilting so had to get the painting done soon. I took some pictures of other set ups to paint, one of them are the tree itself.

On the turps container I took some turps and paint and let the red and blue colors drip down.  Wanted to get that dripping effect, seemed to work real well. Getting ready to teach a workshop tomorrow, it is always exciting to see the end results of each students paintings.

"Past Memories" oil 8x10

My friend Ken took this photo of this old collapsing barn, located in the Santa Cruz mountains. I grew up in the foothills of that area. Been to Santa Cruz quite a few times in my life as a child and adult. I was drawn to the beautiful blue in the shadows . So many memories lie within this frail old barn.

A Walk in the Park oil 8x10

This is a painting of my husband and our bichon dog, Toby. It was a hot summer day and the light was coming through the trees casting these wonderful shadows. There is a lake in the middle of the park, you can walk around it and view the beautiful surroundings. The photo was taken a couple of years ago, I had always wanted to paint it and finally I did. Toby just took a few brush strokes and was done.
