Painted Flowers 8x10 oil Sold

A lot of my paintings are of flowers so I thought I would set up a still life of a scene of  flowers being painted with the canvas, paints and a brush. I had done a still life somewhat like this a while back and had fun with it.

"Geraniums Sunlit" oil 7x5 Sold

Geraniums seem to have that homey feel to them. Roses are when you dress up fancy for an occasion, geraniums are when you kick back at home and don't care what your wearing.

"Pansy Trio" oil 6x6 Sold

Pansies are always a joy to paint, they have such character to them. There are a lot of colors to choose from. I love going to the nursery and having the honor to pick from any flower to be my model.

I wanted this to have simplicity. Simplicity seems more relaxing when your going to have that cup of tea.

"Lavender Bouquet" oil 8x10

Lavenders are a treat to paint because you get to enjoy the wonderful aroma they put off. I have some that have dried in my studio, still smell so good.

Cosmos and a touch of Lobelia 6x6 oil Sold

It doesn't matter what the subject is, I love to paint contrast. Light against dark or dark against light. I like to make up images in my mind and paint them. Sometimes I get stuck though and can't remember exactly what it looked like, for instance the center of these cosmos. I had one pink flower left, so I went outside and studied it. Sometimes I will go back to some photos I have taken and put them in the painting. This painting wasn't in front of me, it was inside of me.

Morning Tea 5x7 oil

When I set this still life up I wasn't sure if I should put in the whole cup or let it go out of the painting. I let it go out to focus on the on three items, cup tea bag and spoon. I decided to add a dark value to the left of the painting to stop the eye, plus it added more interest. If something doesn't feel right, just go for it and fix it, even if it's not there.

Tea 8x10 oil

I always have fun painting this teapot, it has beautiful drippings of blues. When it's in shadow some of the blues almost look black. I always look for contrasting light and shadow when I set up my still life's. I was really impressed when I saw how the shadow flowed down into the cup.

Just Resting 8x10 oil Sold

What caught my eye in this scene was the shadow for the basket. I liked how the light from the baskets weave shown through the shadow. I also liked that old green door. I had painted a larger piece in the past where the whole bike was in view. I recently looked at it again and wanted to do smaller painting and focus more on the basket and shadow.

"Cottage Geraniums" oil 5x5 Sold

For some reason, maybe the cloth it's sitting on, reminds me of a setting you'd see in a cottage.. I like painting old, vintage and cottage type paintings. They seem to be peaceful to me, not sure why.

"Sew" oil 8x10 Sold

I took some items from the sewing box and started to place them here and there, which can take awhile to get a good composition. Instead I just sprawled them all over the cloth, I really liked how it gave the look of simplicity. Those scissors are pretty old and have some rust on them, which I am always drawn to.

Daisies 5x5 oil Sold

I haven't posted for awhile, been busy doing shows and demoing.
I love painting white against a dark background, it seems to really make the white pop. Daisies are always fun to paint. My goal is to paint them in a more loose painterly style.

Violas Six Pack 11x14 oil

This is the second painting I did of the violas but is larger, the small one sold so I wanted to do a larger piece.  I added the clippers to this one, I also thought the bar code looked pretty neat. They were fresh from the nursery standing proud and tall.

A Good Day to Bake 8x10 oil

I loved how the light was shinning and casting wonderful shadows. The light and shadows always inspiring me to paint. This was the same day my sister was out picking apples. You can see the painting a few images down. Sometimes I change her appearance, maybe younger, older, the color of her dress, etc.., but I always have to capture her in some sense. She really does like to bake, which makes it more convincing.

Pansies in Bloom 7x5 oil Sold

When painting flowers and you have a light shinning on them they gravitate to the light. We seem to do the same thing.

Vinca Rosa 7x5 oil Sold

Behind every window there is life. Emotions of happiness, sadness, heartaches and uncertainty. Outside of every window there is life, happiness, sadness, heartaches and uncertainty. There is no escaping. Dear God you see me inside and out, there is no escaping. Let me look through that window to see You.

What caught my eye in this piece was the blue post with the sign on it, I also was drawn by the old doorways on the left, they looked really rusty and worn.

Pansies 7x5 oil Sold

Went to the market and saw all these beautiful pansies. So many colors to choose from. I liked the look of some of the flowers that drooped, gave some interest to the painting. Flowers, how can we not paint them, so many designs that God has created. A wide range of color and shapes not to mention some of them smell so good.

Apple Pie Tonight 8x10 oil

My sister Jan is always willing to be my model. The sun was blasting hot that day, it was around 11:00 in the morning. I wanted to define the light more than anything. Those apples were really good eaten too!

Geraniums by the Window 8x10 oil

I always seem to go back to painting geraniums, love the reds in the flowers and the green complementary color in the leaves. My goal was to keep the bottom portion of the painting in shadow and the flowers and leaves in the light. With touches of light here and there.

Perching Dove 5x7 oil Sold

My brother and his wife have a bird feeder and birds are always flocking there. I got this shot of this dove perching in a birch tree. I liked how the dove was in shadow but a bit of light was hitting his back.

Geraniums on Sill 8x10 oil Sold

I was happy with the lighting on this piece, from the real dark values of the inside of the window to the lightest values on the outside of the window. I really like to capture the feeling of sunlight. This window and sill were a little bit different from what it really looked like,  I do that with most of my paintings, adding and subtracting what was originally there until I get the feeling that it feels right.

Quilting 6x6 oil Sold

I set this still life up using different materials from my sewing box. I tried making a small quilted pillow years back, I will stick to painting. I really appreciate the work that is involved in quilting. I demo my oil paintings at the Washington State Fair, I will take a break and browse to see all the beautiful art and on display are many beautiful quilts. So creative what they can do with these quilts. Anything handmade gets my attention.

Seagull in Flight 5x7 oil

When I was down in Monterey, CA, I took a bunch of photos and this is one of them that I painted from. I cut the boats out and left the masts, thought it made a more interesting composition, and allowing the seagull to be the focal point.

Violets in Light 6x6 oil Sold

I really love painting the light, the light reminds me of God. Those that live in the light shine out of darkness. When dark days come upon me I have to remember who am I living for, me or Christ? It is so easy to live by my own nature but a battle to live for Him. Dear God, let me see your light and not my own darkness.

Lobelia in Blue 5x7 oil

These lobelia were out on my back deck. The sun was shinning and casting wonderful shadows.
When I was a child I never thought to be an artist, even though I loved to color and create.  I was always observing and researching all the whys. One of the observation that caught my attention was being overwhelmed with the light that trickled within the shadows. As I got older and taking visits to the museums, the paintings that took my breath away were the ones filled with light and shadows.

Geranium Flower and Buds 8x10 oil Sold

I haven't posted for awhile, I have been occupied with a commission painting and a painting journal. The painting journal is of a mother Junco bird starting from building her nest, the eggs, her nesting and finally the baby birds. I will be posting it soon.

What inspired me to paint this geranium was the large stem and the angels of the buds. I thought it had a really neat design to it.

Lavenders and Grape Box 8x10 oil

Same lavender sprigs that were hand picked from Squim, WA. The box is an old wood box with a design of grapes. Might have been used to put grapes in it. I liked how the shadows poured down the box from the lavenders. Little things like that give me a yearning to paint.

Basket of Lavenders 6x6 oil Sold

These are the lavenders that we picked from the lavender fields in Squim, Washington. They are sitting on my table and leaning against the wall that I set my objects on to paint. I thought this angle made it more interesting showing more of the lavenders.

Snapdragon Full Form 6x4 oil

I painted this from life and what got my attention were the roots of the snapdragon. Showing its full form, from the flowers to the roots. It is now in a pot and ready to reach for the sun and blossom. I have looked close at flowers and leaves, the details in each leaf, each flower and each root, God has placed them with perfection.

Painted Pansy 7x5 oil

I set this still life up with just the brushes in the jar, it seemed boring so I added the pansy and it became the star of the painting. Sometimes setting up a still life comes easy and sometimes not. Just like life. God is my teacher, counselor and loves me no matter what, and it's all free.

Create 6x6 oil

When I set this still life up and directed the light on the subjects the bottle just lit up and a wonderful cast shadow from the cup caused the light to look even stronger. The liquid in the bottle put a nice reflection on the book. Just looking at painting tools, paint and a blank canvas brings me to want to create.

Black-Capped Chickadee 6x6 oil Sold

I stood with my camera, waiting and waiting for a bird to land close by so I could get a photo of it. Finally this black cap perched on this twig for about two seconds and then was gone. They are so fast and don't sit still for very long. I was surprised that I was able to get a good enough shot. I have a flower stand on my deck and a black cap built a nest in it. There are now three eggs, I walk by it and she doesn't seem to mind. I am going to worry about it till the babies hatch and are on their own.

Sunny Day on the Farm 5x7 oil

What inspired me to paint this piece was the light and shadow hitting the house. When I know I am finished is when I feel that I am in the painting. I can feel the warmth of the sun or the birds singing or the scent of the flowers.

Soothing Lavender 8x10 oil

I saw this bottle of lavender lotion on my sink. I searched the house to see what I could put with it and found lavender sprigs and some lavender soap. I also added the washcloth to lay some of the lavender on it. The still life just fell together, I couldn't wait to get to my easel and start painting it. The scent of lavender is so soothing. Thank you God for all that you give us.

Would You Like Some Bread 11x14 oil

This little girl was trying to feed this goose some bread, not sure if the goose ever did take it. She was so entranced by the goose and vise verse. I loved how the sun shone on her long beautiful hair. I really enjoy painting figures with a story.

Time to Mend 6x6 oil Sold

This was painted from life. I love painting things that are vintage. The beautiful markings of use give so much character.
